Today's Review: Warburtons Toastie With Sourdough

I love sourdough bread, and I love Toastie bread. So to see the two combined in some striking black packaging was enough to get me salivating. I had to be careful not to crush the bread as I grabbed the loaf, and I had some slices straight in my toaster when I got home.

Now, please note, this is not purely sourdough bread, it's bread with sourdough, only 3% in fact. Still, the flavour shows up, and it's pretty good, not entirely authentic, but a lovely hint of sourness that really ramps up the flavour in the bread. Unfortunately the regular bread flavour wins out in the end, but this is a pretty good twist on the original Toastie, and I'm hoping it's a gateway to a higher ratio of sourdough in the future.

My rating: 4/5

  1. I agree, I’ve lived in the USA for 11years and Warburtons doesn’t have it at all. It tastes like a gone off white loaf, yuck

  2. I disagree with the above and have not had the disadvantage of living in the USA. I enjoyed the texture and full flavour the sourdough gave to my toasted bread. I have had a couple of loaves now and the whole family enjoy it. Look forward to trying versions by other bakers to compare.

  3. I love this bread and wish they would make it in a medium slice loaf for sandwiches. Although I am not caeliac I do have a sensitivity to wheat/gluten but can tolerate sourdough bread. I have found that this bread does not cause a reaction like normal bread. I will keep buying it although my local supermarket does not always have it.

  4. It is nothing more than fake sourdough - Ordainary fast Choreleywood process bread with a little sourdough powder chucked in. All supermarkets are trying to cash in with fake sourdough. I am an artisan baker and I bake sourdough from s 20-year-old Sanfransisco bakery starter. Proper sourdough with a wild sourdough starter ferments very very slowly. This breaks down the proteins trhat some paople cannot tolerate, making a more digestable bread. proper sourdough is made from just flour, water, salt and lots of knowhow and time.
