Today's Review: Mr. Kipling James' Peach Fancies

A few boxes of Mr. Kipling cakes have hit the shelves with a Roald Dahl theme. Each one comes with a lovely illustration and an interesting new twist on some already classic cakes. There are a variety of cake slices based on a few books, but I was particularly drawn to these peach fancies, based of course on the giant fruit in the book. They're pretty much like regular fancies, but the fondant has a peach flavour.

I love a fancy, it's hard not to eat a whole bunch in one sitting, and I definitely got through a couple after I opened the box. Truth is though, they're not fantastic. The cake is a nice soft sponge, the cream in the middle is decent, but not quite enough to offset the fact that the sponge is a little dry. The icing definitely has a peach flavour, and it's pretty authentic, it just fades fairly quickly, and after eating one I didn't get that nice peachy hint on subsequent cakes. Nice overall, but the peach doesn't quite hold up, even though it's really good to start off with. An interesting twist on the original, but they do fall a bit flat.

My rating: 3/5
