Today's Review: Tesco Rhubarb & Custard Lanterns

Tesco have updated their baked goods again, just in time for the warmer months, and nothing says "summer" like... lantern shaped pastries? Well, I guess you'd have lanterns set up in your garden on a nice warm evening, but I figured a lantern shape would be more suited to Halloween. Who knows, maybe this is just the best shape they could come up with. But let's focus on what's inside, a mixture of rhubarb and custard, which is a quintessentially British thing, to be sure.

Despite the weird shape, the pastry is pretty good. It's nice and soft, but thick enough to provide a nice, filling base, in the midst of which is layered a generous portion of filling. It's a good mixture, a combination of the kind of custard you'd find in a Danish, and a nice blob of tart rhubarb that's pretty packed with flavour. There is a bit more custard than I'd have hoped compared to the rhubarb, the levels are a little off, but maybe that's just wishful thinking. I guess they have to use the rhubarb sparingly for profit purposes, greedy corporations. Still, this is a good pastry, with a tasty filling, and it might not be around at the end of the season, so go pick some up.

My rating: 4/5
